This celebration also called Chandeleuse (candle) takes place on the 2nd of February, exactly 40 days after Christmas. Originally a pagan celebration it was christianized under Pope Gélase the first to become the celebration of Jesus at the Temple.
Each fellowship had to bring back home a lit candle from church. The candle had to stay lit all the way back home. In the meantime another tradition was born:the making of the "crêpes". Both rites are linked. Indeed traditions say that if you were not making crêpes on the day of "la Chandeleur", the wheat would be spoiled for the year. In another tradition: you are supposed to flip the crêpes with one hand while holding a golden coin in the other hand. Then the golden coin must be wrapped in the crêpe and the crêpe must be carried in procession by the whole family and placed on top of an armoire for the year to come. Then after a year the golden coin is retrieved and given to a poor.....by doing so the family rests assured of good fortune for the year to come. All kinds of traditions and proverbs are linked to "la Chandeleur". Nowadays, it is above all a day of enjoyment spent to make crêpes and to taste them with all kind of goodies, chocolate (nutella), all sorts of jam, you can even have salty crêpes with ham and cheese.....Children enjoy this day as much for the crêpes as for the magic of making them and flipping them artfully! Recipe:
For approximately 8 crêpes you need:
INGREDIENTS: 1 cup all-purpose flour 2 eggs 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup water 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons butter, melted DIRECTIONS: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and the eggs. Add the milk and water, stirring to combine. Add the salt and butter; beat until smooth. Ask your mom or dad to heat a lightly oiled frying pan over medium high heat. Cook the crêpe for about 2 minutes, until the bottom is light brown. Loosen with a spatula, turn and cook the other side. Serve hot.
.....and don't forgot to flip the crêpes in the pan...it's so much fun!!!!!!!!!! And now, just enjoy with friends and family....... |
